10 Things you must not do on a first date with your partner

The first date, what an exciting experience. You've made it past the initial review and now it's time take it to the next level. Knowing that getting to stage two can be a bit nerve racking, it's time to throw on the confidence and show your potential mate a night they won't soon forget. Come off as a jerk and you'll find yourself sleeping alone, AGAIN. With that being said, here are the top 10 things you should avoid doing on your first date.

1 Be On Time
No one likes to wait around, showing up on time not only shows your date respect but proves that your a reliable person.

2 Don't Show Up Like You Just Got Out Of Bed
Proper grooming goes a long way, comb your hair, take a shower and shave that stubble. Look through your wardrobe to find something appropriate for the date, no golf shoes at the opera house please. Cologne or perfume is also a good addition to your dating arsenal ( use sparingly, wear it don't bathe in it ) Having barely gotten to know each other you want to not only satisfy your date's mental side but their physical side as well. Looking good counts.

3 Avoid Talking About Yourself All Night
The first date is a perfect opportunity to get to know each other. I stress the words, "to get know each other" because this night isn't only about you. Make sure there is an equal exchange of information. Talk a little about yourself then when there is a pause ask your date a question, or what their opinion is. No one likes a self boaster.

4 Keep It Simple
You may be tempted to rent the limo, buy a dozen roses and hire an orchestra but there is such a thing as overdoing it. The best first dates are the simple ones. People tend to be scared off by someone who tries too hard to impress. Be yourself, calm and collected, a good night will follow.

5 Sip Your Drink, Beware Of Over Drinking
It's ok to have a few drinks to lighten up the conversation and make the night more playful but avoid having too many. You may think your a stud after a 5th of vodka, but it's unlikely the rest of the world will. Spending the night vomiting in the bathroom is never going to be impressive, neither is premature drunken advances. Nervous as you may be, sip at your drink, spread them out throughout the night.

5 Keep Your Eyes On Your Date
It's common practice to check out the people around you, but do your best to keep your eyes on your date. Nothing's more insulting then catching your would be partner checking out the person behind you. Not only does this show disrespect it makes your date feel like there're not good enough for you. Eye contact shows you're interested and enamoured.

7 Avoid Asking Too Many Personal Questions
This being your first date you may be wise to avoid some of the more personal questions. People don't always feel comfortable divulging their greatest fears and worries. Take your time and ask top layer questions. Seek light hearted answers without the intense specifics. If all goes well there will be plenty of time to learn more.

8Talking Too Much About Your Ex Is A No No
It's ok to talk generally about past relationships in your life but no one wants to hear you drone on and on about why they all ended. This date is about starting something fresh, the night should be able making new connections, not dwelling on old ones.

9 Letting The Conversation Die
Sometimes one of the hardest things to do while in pursuit of new love, is finding common subjects to talk about. Depending on your compatibility sometimes the conversation rips along for hours, others constantly pause and slow down. It's a fine game of chess but do your best to keep thinking of new common grounds to talk about. ( And no the weather is generally a bad choice )

10 Lacking In Confidence
Ask anyone and they'll tell you, confidence is essential. We are all a lot more attracted to people who are comfortable in their own skin. Staring at the wall and fidgeting with your watch is going to get you nowhere. Your date should feel like they're lucky to be out with you, not that they're doing a favour for some basement troll. Smile, laugh, and make eye contact. Believe in yourself and your abilities to show your date a good time.

Alas first dates are always going to be a bit awkward and no amount of advice is going to make them go completely smoothly. First dates are a time to test your compatibility through speech and body language. No matter how hard you try some people just aren't meant, don't let a few let unsuccessful experiences discourage you. There are plenty of fish in the sea and there are many more loves to be found.
